Prior to experiencing this book, I didn't think it was possible to tell a complete, satisfying story using only pictures. I don't read graphic novels, but this one is something really special. It portrays the immigrant experience in a surprisingly original way. It doesn't depict any specific countries. Instead it shows the universality of the experience of going to a foreign country, filled with hope for a better life, and finding absolutely everything is alien to you. I especially liked the message the book conveys about how important it is for immigrants who are settled in to offer a welcome and assistance to new arrivals. Amazing artwork, not cartoonish like you might expect from a picture book.
